Sidewalk Chalk Project
Our parish "chalk project" has begun! All are welcomed to stop by the church anytime and share a message or create a work of art! Feel free to draw on the sidewalk or in the parking spaces. We ask that you bring your own chalk but if you don't have any, there is some available on the picnic table. Take 1 or 2 pieces of chalk and keep what you use. Please maintain social distancing and wear masks.
When you are done you can spend some time with our beautiful statue of Mary.

Burying Liturgical Items in The New Bell Tower

When an item is brought into use in our sacred liturgy (chalice, lectionary, Missal, altar cloth, etc.), it is blessed, with very specific text from the Book of Blessings. This blessing signifies the permanent sanctification and dedication of that object for some sacred purpose. Once blessed and dedicated for divine worship or veneration, it must be treated with reverence and must not be used in either an improper or profane way (cf. Code of Canon Law, #1171).

When an item is obviously damaged or worn beyond its ability to function worthily, it is to be burned or buried. This is often done in the Easter Fire at the Easter Vigil. Every year, we burn damaged linens, blessed palms that have been returned to the parish, and the sacred oils from the previous year. Those ashes are then buried in the earth.

Today, with the laying of the foundation of the new parish bell tower, several items were taken out of liturgical service and buried beneath that foundation. That which has been dedicated to God should be returned to God, in a sense, the same way a person's dead body is committed to the earth. Never should one just "throw out" what has been dedicated to God.

We give thanks to God for the many people whose lives were touched by these sacred objects in the Mass through the years, and we build on firm foundation of our faith in God. Take a walk up to the parish in your free time, and see what great progress is being made on our new parish hall!
